Up-to-Date With the Man-Nah

Written by Cahn D. Cotter

In the dressing sheds after a tough game for the Pirtek Parramatta Eels, you’ll find a jubilant, exuberant young man by the name of Tim Mannah.

In just his second year of the NRL competition with the Eels, Mannah has claimed his position as a permanent front-runner from the sideline seats.

Asked if he would prefer being a permanent in the run on squad, Tim showed the loyalty, respect and the spirit that runs through the lifeline of this Parramatta Eels outfit.

“Every player or front rower wants to be a run on as a front rower, but in saying that I got the most respect for Caylo (Nathan Cayless) and Fui, (Fui Fui Moi Moi),” he said.

“I’m happy to do my job of the bench and that is carrying the football forward when these guys come off for a breather.”

Tim’s first season as a consistent player for the Eels was a roller coaster of emotions; the Eels went from 14th place to a grand final.

The laid back character that is Tim Mannah is happy off the field, but when it comes time to play Tim knows that being a rookie no longer makes the cut for the Eels.

“In your first year you get away with being a rookie and not making an impact but no excuses now, second year player, I want to show the team I got a lot more to offer than last year.”

Devils in a Storm

Written By Cahn D. Cotter

We all know the past week that the Rugby League world has been crushed by the scandal of the Melbourne Storm salary cap.

The only people we have heard about this scandal from though, are the high priced media who have been waiting for another shock wave to hit our game.

As always they concentrate on the negative sides and studying journalism, we all know that one of the major factors is not to persuade audience’s opinions.

The stories focused from the Storm scandal were all based on the negatives on how this club and players involved have potentially killed Rugby League in Melbourne, and added the possibilities of a shake up of other NRL clubs in the future.

It has been said that this scandal could ruin the Rugby League game forever?

However, I know that this game is for the fans and even though this story encapsulated headlines throughout Australia for all the wrong reasons, Rugby League fans stood as one and supported the game like never before.

I acknowledge that and want to focus on some of the greater positives from this story to let our readers know where these champion players came from.

The story is of a junior club and how it helped the Storm, supplying them with an abundance of juniors to be one of the most successful clubs in the modern era.

This club has produced greats of the game and I am proud to write this article about them acknowledging them as a superb junior club with strong traditions, heritage and champion players of the past and future.

It is a club that focuses on supporting players, growth and development, community deeds and a passion for Rugby League that grows everyday and has done for over 100 years.

We are focusing on these behind the scenes points because it is important to support and help the Junior Rugby League Community and also acknowledge where these superstars of our game have come from. Because all of us Rugby League fanatics know that it will take more than a Storm salary cap scandal to finish our game.

Some of these Storm players are heroes of the game, some people say not anymore though because what they have done. I like to think of it like this though; it is not what the Storm players have done to the people. It is what some of the people involved in the Storm club have done to these players.

The likes of Greg Inglis, Cooper Cronk and Cameron Smith, once all premiership winners for the Storm have now had their names forever tarnished on this beautiful, passionate game of ours.

It did not just stop there however; other players also affected through these Storm ranks are Michael Crocker, Dallas Johnson, Israel Folou, Ryan Hoffman and Jeremy Smith.

Where are they from? The Norths Devils

The Norths Devils are the most feared club to date in the QRL and now the Queensland Cup. All of the above players mentioned played junior rugby league with the Norths Devils. You are probably asking how did they get to the Storm? And we will get to that soon.

They are undefeated in the 2010 In-Trust Super/Queensland Cup with 7 from 7 wins and have had many successful years dating back to 1927.

They have always found juniors of high calibre and majority of these players have gone on to represent Australian Rugby League at the highest levels.

We focus on this topic at hand because the success years of the late 90’s to present for the Storm where produced by all these players that played for the Norths Devils.

Records speak for themselves as we head into the next chapter.

The Golden Years

In the 1960’s, the Norths Devils went through a golden era of Rugby League. It was from 1959 through until 1970. These Highlights included:

➢ A-Grade Premierships (8): 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1966 and 1969

➢ Peter Scott Memorial Shield (5): 1959, 1961, 1963, 1966 and 1975.

And also the Club Championships

➢ Championships (14): 1945, 1954, 1959, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1966, 1967, 1969, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974 and 2005.

Melbourne Storm Era (1998 to 2007)

The success of the Storm came from the help of North Devils junior players and management. It was through an agreement that saw the Storm have access to these players as juniors, and the success years for the Storm kept rolling on. It saw them have an era of domination.

When Melbourne entered the NRL competition, they agreed to terms with the Norths Devils for them to become the feeder club in 1998.

With that came more glory for the Norths Devils, when immediately in that year they had won the QLD Cup defeating the West Panthers.

And in the following year, the Melbourne Storm went on to win their first NRL premiership against newly merged side the St. George Illawarra Dragons.

This system was working and was highly successful for both parties. The feeder club Norths Devils seem to have struck gold when they were embraced with the development of youngsters for the Storm and allowing players to have dual registration.

It did not stop there, the success of the Storm continued to grow and from the 2006 NRL Grand Final team the Storm had 13 players who had all previously played with the Norths Devils. This team included the likes of Matt Geyer who won a Premiership with the Devils in 1998 and Melbourne in 1999.

But in 2007, the ties were ended. Norths Devil associated in being apart of the Brisbane Broncos development and has done ever since.

Current and Past Norths Devils Players

We only have to look over the record books from the Norths Devils to see how many successful players have played for them. And some of these players that have played with the Norths Devils are now legends and immortals of the modern game and the past.

We can measure the size of success for the Norths Devils by introducing Test Matches, Australian tours, Tri-Nations and State of Origins.

In Sunday, 14th October 2007 the Kangaroos came up against the Kiwis at Westpac Stadium. From both these sides, the Norths Devils had produced 10 players. The Australian Kangaroos were Captained by former Norths Devils Captain Cameron Smith, who also is the now Storm Captain.

The Australian side contained the following former Norths Devils players: Cameron Smith (c), Greg Inglis, Israel Folau, Dallas Johnson, Cooper Cronk, Ryan Hoffman and Michael Crocker.

The New Zealand side contained the following former Norths Devils players: Jeremy Smith, Jeff Lima and Paul Whatuira.

A positive to be brought out of this is three of these players above, Crocker, Lima and Jeremy Smith all played in the 2008 premiership with Norths Devils and for the majority of players, all were raised and bread juniors with the Norths Devils.

Only five players in the history of the Storm have been brought over to play with the Norths Devils.

But next, we show you the past greats and some of these names will knock you off your chair, if you are already not blown away.

The Norths Devils are enriched with talent and acknowledge appreciation and respect for the players that have come through the ranks. Some of these players went on to bigger and better levels in the Rugby League code and some forever have the name marked on the wall of fame.

Here are some names that over the many decades have strapped the boots, lifted their socks and raised the roof for this successful club.

➢ Clive Churchill
➢ Bill Pearson
➢ Lloyd Weir,
➢ Fonda Metassa
➢ Johnny Brown
➢ Elywn Walters
➢ Steve Calder
➢ Darryl Brohman
➢ John Sattler
➢ Nev Draper
➢ Glen Harrison
➢ Peter Hall
➢ Nick Geiger
➢ Mark Graham
➢ John Payne
➢ Greg Conescu
➢ Mark Murray
➢ Paul Khan
➢ Greg Dowling
➢ Steve Walters
➢ Joe Kilroy
➢ Paul McCabe
➢ Trevor Gillmeister
➢ Ross Henrick

What a list Rugby League Player fans, who would not want to also strap on a pair of boots and pull the Devils Guernsey proudly over their backs when associated with names like these above.

Fine Tune

It seems the Norths Devils are a club that have produced many great players over a long period of time, the list can go on for them.

The Storm is in crisis at the moment. But the Norths Devils are not. They are stronger than ever and already in 2010 have proven to be difficult to beat.

They have produced immense talent and are the food chain to most Rugby League clubs in the NRL and the Rugby League world.

It is a club where players are the priority and it has been proven that that is the case. It is a club of long and proud history.

It is for the above reasons that we should not stamp hate on players playing for the Storm, because majority of these players came from a successful junior club called the Norths Devils.

The Norths Devils are proud to say that these juniors came from their neck of the woods and wore the gargantuan responsibilities on their back when putting the jerseys on.

Look at the Storm, and differ the club from the players. Because majority of these players came from the Norths Devils and looking through the history archives, it will show you that they are some of the best and their successes, even though stripped from them goes to show the strength of this junior club, the Norths Devil.

The Feds are back

Written By Cahn D. Cotter

For Danny Khoury, a traditionalist and Club President of the Enfield Federals, is just one season off from producing what could well be the greatest club fight back in the history of junior Rugby League.

A once Federal with Brother Paul in their teens for twelve years; Danny knows what it means to be a FED.

In 2010, he resurrected the club from no-where and with the help of Strathfield Mayor Tony Maroon, helped the oldest club in Australia wipe debt free and find its feet again.

The Enfield Federals have a long history, a story to enthral all who listen. They had times when even mythical titans could not have struck them down. And then the worst of times came when the club was forced to fold.

But as that era ended, Danny created a new one where the passion, traditions and blood run thick, keeping them alive in the 21st century. This new lease of life for Enfield has seen the club grow in a short period, with Grand fathers, fathers and mothers returning their children to play for ‘Ye Ole Faithful’.

The Enfield Federals are back.

An era begins, and then ends…

The Enfield Federals took the field at Cooke Park, Belfield in 1912 wearing the now traditional Magpie coloured Guernsey. The badge of honour, a simple E.F sign placed inside a shield.

From this day, the Enfield Federals would be a team remembered for long traditions, champion players and a long history of success. However, with this long history came its ‘ups and downs’.

Enfield took a break through World War One to help the efforts of the soldiers on the Western Front.

After returning from a four-year stint on the sidelines, the Feds returned to play for another twenty-two years, until 1936 where legend has it that the whole team were disqualified for fighting on the field against local derby side, Burwood.
What made this legend famous though, was that the ‘Fisty Cuffs’ continued all afternoon and all night before finishing up in a local Pub, the Crossways.

After World War Two, the Enfield Diggers emerged as the prominent side leaving the Federal name behind.
However, the club went through another growth period, and as the juniors began to expand the club, the name again changed to the Enfield Waratahs.

Prior to 1959, the Enfield Waratahs were absorbed and became South Strathfield J.R.L. However club President at the time, John Hehir fought and claimed back the original name, the Enfield Federals.

From this time forward, the Feds were unstoppable, histories honour boards show that these sides could play Rugby League.

‘F’ grade went undefeated in three seasons, scoring 482 points for and only 4 against – not having their try line crossed.
Later in 1969, Enfield ‘E’ Grade almost equalled that record in one season with 478 for and 22 against.

Then the unimaginable; Enfield in 1996 where forced to fold and the long history looked doomed until Danny Khoury decided to fight again for what was right.

And now; thanks to Danny Khoury and his passions for the junior game, junior club and community adds another chapter to this successive, traditional folklore story that is the Enfield Federals.

Successes

In all, the Enfield Federals have won 76 premierships since 1959.

The Enfield Federals had a lot of success with hookers. From 1912 – present there has been six professional League hookers produced by Enfield, the most recent one Robbie Farah.

The most note-able of players though to succeed through the FED ranks was Jim Sedaris. Jim’s long history began in the U/11’s for Enfield where he won the best and fairest award six years in a row.

John Purcell was another hooker that played 10 seasons for Wests in the Tommy Raudonikis era.

Then there was a talented centre, fullback and winger who played all of his junior football with the FEDS before getting the opportunity with Wests in 1976 where his sizzling acceleration, side-step and backing up made him a constant danger to the opposition. He is no other than Wayne Smith. Wayne later in his career transferred to Cronulla from Wests and finished playing with Gosford.

Hazem El Masri also grew up playing for the FEDS before his boot, speed and agility took him all the way to the top with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, where he became the greatest ever point scorer in the history of the NRL.

Anthony Mundine also strapped his boots for a season with the Federals.

Danny Khoury talks 2010 for the Enfield Federals

When Danny Khoury walked into Strathfield Councils Offices with his unique story, Mayor Tony Maroon decided to help the Enfield Federals causes.

Tony was more than happy to help after hearing Danny’s ideas of helping the Rugby League Community and bringing the traditional Enfield Federals back into the game.

Tony Maroon wiped $12,000 debt from the Enfield club and was in full support of them returning.

Danny is adamant that juniors who get the opportunity or want to play with Enfield Federals will be a part of a tight community with long traditions.

“It is non-for-profit organisation. It’s all for the kids and is always going to be for the kids,” Danny continued.

“We will help them out with their uniforms and help them be a part of a team who is very supportive to getting juniors playing Rugby League.”

The Enfield Guernsey remains the same colours, the black and white, however Danny chose to modernise it with a new coat of arms.

“There have been three emblems in total throughout our history which are the E.F symbol inside a shield, the old coat of arms and now the new coat of arms,” Danny said.

“We are the only club with the coat of arms as a logo, and we are proud to wear it and have it.”

Enfield Federals have always had successful eras’ and this new one is no doubt going to be the same.

Since 1912 the club has always averaged between 19-20 teams, but now there are only 5. The U/15’s which Danny coaches are the highest graded team and they have already moved up in the ranks in 2010 because of the quality of players involved.

Further to that all the Enfield teams won in the first round of 2010, a clean sweep.

Danny is looking for more players; new players, old players and players that have had family background involved to come to the Enfield Federals and make a once dominant club in the past, an impressive club in the future.

“At the moment it’s not about premierships, it’s about getting the Federals name out there and building up the community, developing and primarily helping the juniors in the sport of Rugby League.”

“Premierships are a bonus and will hopefully come later.”

You can join the Federals reunion at Belfield RSL, Friday 23rd July 2010 at 7pm. You can contact President of Enfield Federals, Danny Khoury 0433 690 677.

Back in a Flash

Well Rugby League fans. I am back.

It's been a hectic past few weeks for me trying to climb the ladder of the NRL world with work experience continuing with the Parramatta Eels and also a little part time gig with Rugby League Player Magazine.

However, I cannot leave my true fans un noticed for too much longer.

What a past few weeks the NRL has seen, down to the Storm Scandal to now the State of Origins.

I was somewhat right with my Blues side and think that majority of my selections would have been all there if it were not for injury.

Timana Tahu V Greg Inglis, cannot wait.

Jamaal Idris, certainly deserves an origin position with his recent gargantuan performances for the Bulldogs.

I'll be back in full for next weeks round 12 clashes with updated tipping info for all died hard fans.

Please feel free to contact me via email if you have any concerns.

Yours truly

My NRL Round 5 Tips

Every week it seems is as unpredictable as the last. Some teams just do not show up on the day to play, example is the Eels.

It started on Friday night with the Storm defeating the repetitive Dragons in Melbourne. It was all class on when these teams met and the Saints lacked everything, from defense and in attack. They were merely shut down, Soward's game once again being picked off with ease.

The Roosters played a flawless first half of Rugby League against a frustrated Lockyer's Broncos. However in the second half the mistakes dominated what could have been a cricket score.

JT's magic saw the Cowboys win again at home, and a Tonga hat-trick against the Titans was the highlight.

The Raiders in Canberra, I tipped them and at half-time I felt comfortable knowing I would have another tip correct, until Robbie Farah decided it was time to destroy. The Tigers came from behind in typical fashion letting other oppositions know, that they better turn up to play 80 minutes.

The Rabbitohs recording back-to-back wins and looking like a team, playing with style and aggression.

All up I had 5/8 tips correct, not bad, however I doubt anyone would have received the full 8 points this week.

This week it is too easy for me, I am choosing all the home teams.

Cahn D. Cotter's Round 5 Tips

St. George Illawarra Dragons V Brisbane Broncos

I'm tipping the Dragons. WIN Stadium, pick the Dragons.

The Broncos have an unknown team traveling away from home, and looking at Lockyer last week, his frustration is bound to grow more this game.

Out-wide in defense the Broncos looked flimsy last week; the Dragons back line of Morris, Boyd and Cooper should have a field day. Also the added strengths of Prior and Creagh is certainly only going to make it more difficult for the Broncos to defend.

The young Broncos will be under plenty of pressure this game. Last week they dropped to much ball and the Roosters made them pay early in the first half.
The Dragons will dispose of them early, and then continue dominance with match fitness later.

Gold Coast Titans V Melbourne Storm

I'm tipping the Titans

It's a hard task to defeat the Titans at home, even if your inform like the Storm at the moment.
Without Scott Prince there I was almost tempted to tip Storm, however I'm staying true to all home sides this week.

Reasons I am picking the Titans is that they are playing at home and big players such as Laffranchi, Minichello, Bailey, Rogers, Campbell and Friend can match it with the best.

Never count at the Storm in games. They have experience in the big ones which well help them here, but I think the Titans will step up for this match and it will be close.
If the Storm get out early, the Titans are gone. If the Titans stick in there, the Titans by a try.

South Sydney Rabbits V Newcastle Knights

I'm tipping the Rabbits

Back to back wins for the Rabbits against a Knights team filthy that they could not hold on to a victory against Penrith.

Sam Burgess, Dave Taylor and John Sutton are the keys here for Souths if they are to stamp dominance. Dave Taylor is getting comfortable with his role in Souths and with his stats for last week can only be more confident this week.
Sam Burgess can find the line, expect a double from him when he breaks up the middle of this Knights defense.

Corey Patterson is the only hope for the Knights. If he can get his arms free with players running off him, the Souths big men might fall victim.

Souths by 14.

Canterbury Bulldogs V NZ Warriors

I'm Tipping the Dogs

I think it is time for the big guns to fire as a team this week, and the wooden spoon contenders to show why they are in fact labeled that in 2010.

The Dogs to strong up the middle and out-wide. All players are running into form, and the Dogs forward pack are running in twos giving Kimmorley the time he needs.

Ben Barba should come off the bench and add spark late in the second half and run the warriors big pack of forwards ragged.

Josh Morris and Steve Turner to grab two tries each, Bulldogs by plenty.

North Queensland Cowboys V Wests Tigers

I'm tipping the Cowboys

Jonathan Thurston is controlling everything, his vision is far superior to any other player in the game. The only other player close is Robbie Farah.

Tough game to pick because both teams are so electrifying.

At home though, and every week the Cowboys play there, I will be calling it the fortress. Dairy Farmers stadium is a graveyard.

No Keithy Galloway this week, been ruled out with shoulder niggle and this will cause problems with go forward. Keithy averages over 150 metres a game and is on top for the Tigers in all metres run. Big Loss.

The Cowboys are on fire and in form and I cannot see them losing this one.

Manly Warringah Sea-Eagles V Cronulla Sharks

I'm tipping the Sea-Eagles

From up, up Cronulla, to down down Sharks.

Manly out at home against a Sharks outfit that could only scrape there way over the line at home against the out of form Eels will struggle with the likes of Lyon, Matai, Tony Williams and Watmough.

Manly's defense is too strong and there attack is starting to stretch there legs. Plus they have a furious coach who expects nothing more than a win.

Cronulla do not have the defense to hold out the sea-eagles attack and if Cronulla are not careful, plenty could be run in.

The only problem with Manly is the consistent drop ball which has hurt them in the opening month, and out times they lack go forward. But at Brookvale watch the Sea-Eagles soar.

Penrith Panthers V Sydney Roosters

I'm tipping the Panthers

Last week the Roosters got off to a flyer against Brisbane, but then nothing in the second half.

Brisbane had virtually unknowns in the side and Sydney could not put them away. They played complacent football which they cannot do against Penrith.

Penrith too strong at home and vice versa to the Roosters last week, came home strong with a dismal first half. I think momentum and self belief is there now for the Panthers who will start to win consistently until the final rounds.

Panthers by 12.

Parramatta Eels V Canberra Raiders

I'm tipping the Eels

When and where I do not know, but the Eels need to pull their fingers out now and start winning or September football is gone, going, gone.

If Hayne or Moi Moi are not doing it for the Eels, no one is.

The Raiders do not travel well away from home, but are in for a chance this week. Hard tip as I see this match as a non-result almost. Pointless if you will.

The Eels. Only because they must start winning and at Parra Stadium, it is the place to start.

Good Luck all tippers this week.

Sharks Well Deserved Win

Written by Cahn D. Cotter

Not to take anything away from Cronulla-Sutherland, but a win is a win. Even-though the first half was ordinary from both sides, and that the Eels did not show up to play, Sharks still managed to overcome a horrendous losing streak to get a win.

I am one to give credit where it is due, and the Sharks deserve it, especially Trent Barrett.
The first half was lack luster from both sides offering very little scoring opportunities. The consistent dropped ball in own halves was understandable with the torrential rain that did fall.
However the Sharks defended the few opportunities that Jarryd Hayne tried to create, and once nil all at half time, I turned and spoke to another fan, "the sharks have got this". He nodded in agreement and we continued watching.

Twenty minutes into the second half I saw the confidence growing in the Sharks attack, something that has not been there for sometime. The flare of Trent Barrett, Gallen and Douglas running towards the line with meaning, and then the break through.

The Sharks players, I supposed looked at their loyal supporters, standing and sitting in the rain singing and cheering once Blake Ferguson scored the first try. Was it that that gave inspiration?

The Sharks still have a long way to go, but that win was well deserved considering the battering the media gave the players and coach. I personally think that that was a win for the loyal fans who turned out in droves to back their side.

They needed it and I only hope that they can go back to back now. It is what the club needed for so long.

Congratulations Cronulla-Sutherland...

Melbourne outclass repetitive Dragons

Written by Cahn D. Cotter

The Storm showed all of us just why they are the benchmark this year. As explained in my tips for round 4, I said that this will be the match for the Storm.
And with that, it was.

The Dragons repetition of attack phases did not trouble the Storm one bit, as the likes of Soward, Hornby and Creagh were shut down with ease.
It is this repetition that will see the Dragons struggle with there season, unless Coach Bennett addresses it.

Soward struggled all night with the Storms defense, and was brought back down another level. Soward's anger and frustration showed at the end of the match, turning his back on Billy Slater's hand shake.

The Storm showed persistence, class and above all that they were still a level above any team with there clinical style of play. It is something that the Dragons are trying to achieve on their own, but without the class of Slater, Cronk and Smith, will not be able too.

Even though statistics show both these team being fairly even on the night, it was the Storm that completed more sets of six, less errors and the Dragons lack of discipline that gave away to many penalties.

Lockyer Frustrated; Warrants Rep Decision

Written By Cahn D. Cotter

Watching Darren Lockyer play on Friday Night was as frustrating for me as it was for him.
The inexperienced Broncos fumbled there way through the mistake-athon match, offering any assistance to the brilliant mind of 5/8th Darren Lockyer.

The frustration could be read all over Lockyer face. Up until now, the Broncos have had a great run of players and talent but this year they lack the quality that they once had, and even with the mastermind there, will find making the eight, impossible unless vast improvements are made suddenly.

Personally, I do not think Darren has ever played with the quality of players he did on Friday night. Most of the players aged under 20 years were debutantes or players with little experience in first grade.

I think this decision will warrant Lockyer to continue his rep football. Even after 30 origins and 50 tests for Australia, the veteran will want to finish his career on a high. Rep football is indeed what Locky needs.
Locky needs to be amongst the greats of the game, and after Friday nights exhibition match, will only warrant his decision to continue.

Locky gave balls to forwards that dropped them hitting up. He fed ball to the back-line that could not score. He attacked the line on his own only to find another bronco player in his way or no-one backing up.

It is great for these young broncos to be bucking under Lockyer, but in his final years of NRL, he needs to be playing amongst the greats.

Great Responses for 'Rothfield Vs Me' Article

Well another article and this time great response from fellow passionate Rugby League Supporters. Please keep them coming.

Yesterday I wrote an article 'Rothfield Vs Me'. The article was about Phil Rothfield, highly respected Sports Editor for the Daily Telegraph and his proposed selections of the NSW Blues team, versus my selections.

To read this original article follow link http://cahndcotterrugbyleaguewriter.blogspot.com/2010/03/rothfields-versus-me.html

A lot of people have given great response to this, with there choice of selections for the Blues team and surprisingly a lot of them agree with some of my choosing, rather than Rothfields.

Cahn D. Cotter's Selection

1. Jarryd Hayne
2. Brett Morris
3. Timana Tahu
4. Matt Cooper
5. Josh Morris
6. Brett Finch
7. Mitchell Pearce
8. Keith Galloway
9. Michael Ennis
10. Luke Douglas
11. Nathan Hindmarsh (C)
12. Anthony Laffranchi
13. Chris Heighington

Reserves - Luke Lewis, Ben Creagh, Feleti Mateo, Anthony Watmough/Dan Hunt

I would certainly like to write about all of the responses but unfortunately I cannot. Here is a few of the majority selections that have been mentioned.

Ben Cross Played lasts years State of Origin and is ready for another year. Strong up-front and can make metres.

Todd Carney Half-Back choice over Mitchell Pearce; like I explained to one follower, and this is only my opinion, that Todd Carney can still be a little selfish at times with the ball and is not a team player. While Mitch Pearce is a quality half-back with team commitment around him.

And finally Isaac De Gois After reading a followers adding of De Gois, I am in favour of swapping Ennis around to play De Gois at hooker. He is a work horse and plays full 80 minutes with class.

It was a great choice.

Thanks for all your responses, if anyone else wants to add more, please do so via blog site, and I will see to it to get back you http://cahndcotterrugbyleaguewriter.blogspot.com/2010/03/rothfields-versus-me.html

Junior Sharks Thrown Back Into the Water for Land Dwellers

Written By Cahn D. Cotter

Ricky Stuart is a legend of the game. 243 first grade games for the Raiders and the Bulldogs.

Stuart won three premierships with the Canberra Raiders, playing 203 games and winning the Clive Churchill Medal in 1990.
In 1992 and 1993 he was again named the Raiders' player of the year and in 1993 Stuart won the Dally M Medal for the Winfield Cup's Player of the Year.

Ricky Stuart played nine test matches for Australia from 1990, touring with the Australian side to Great Britain and France in 1990 and 1994.

Stuart also played fourteen State of Origin matches for New South Wales. He was named man-of-the-match in the second game of the 1990 series.

His coaching career began in 2002 with the Sydney Roosters where he won a premiership in the same year.
With the Sydney Roosters Ricky Stuart had 65% wins, with 130 games as coach.

Now with Cronulla, from 70 games as coach has had just 41% wins.

There is nothing wrong with Ricky Stuart. Just the Sharks.

My question being asked is their loyalty to the Sharks Guernsey?

How many Juniors do the Sharks have playing for them now?

My theory is that the Sharks are releasing junior players to free up money to buy other high profile prospects.
This in turn leaves a huge dilemma on the Sharks, and that is there is no Loyalty, Passion or Pride for the Sharks Guernsey.

Keith Galloway, who is a potential NSW State of Origin player was a Sharks junior, playing for the Yarrawarrah Tigers as a boy. Now he plays for the Tigers.

Cameron Ciraldo now play for the Newcastle Knights, however played for St. Josephs Joeys.

Sharks Team Now

Luke Covell: Junior Club Murwillumbah Colts Previous Club Wests Tigers

Paul Aiton: Junior Clubs Caboolture Snakes Previous Clubs Penrith Panthers

Trent Barrett: Junior Clubs Temora Previous Clubs Illawarra Steelers 1996-98, St George Illawarra Dragons 1999-2006, Wigan UK 2007-08

Paul Gallen: Junior Clubs Wentworthville

Anthony Tupou: Junior Clubs West Newcastle Magpies

Nathan Stapleton: Junior Clubs Southport School

Ben Pomeroy: Junior Clubs Cambridge Park

I'll stop there, because the list goes on. The only players that are Sharks Juniors currently are:

Scott Porter: Junior Clubs Cronulla-Caringbah
Reece Williams Junior Clubs Yarrawarrah Tigers

Massive problems at the Sharks, because without the juniors there, no loyalty or pride can be built around the Sharks Guernsey.

Anybody out there know other players? Please let me know what you think?

Rothfield Versus Me

Written By Cahn D. Cotter

It amazes me to see Phil Rothfield, Daily Telegraph Editor, as well as other experts of the game to have already been commenting on the State of Origin selections for the Blues, so early in the competition.

Honestly, Sharks to make the 8? Phil, every fan knew the Sharks were going to be lack-luster this year. Why? it has been the same for 30 years.

Check out:

Phil Rothfield, a highly regarded expert of the game, recently selected his version of the State of Origin Blues Squad that could potentially get the job done.
I believe, if the selectors go on what he said, the Blues will be looking down the barrel of 5 straight series losses.

Some of his selection I agree with, but the likes of Gallen, Jennings, Weyman, Bird and Perry are absurd. I tell you why soon...

Phil Rothfield's Side

1. Jarryd Hayne
2. Brett Morris
3. Chris Lawrence
4. Michael Jennings
5. Josh Morris
6. Greg Bird
7. Mitchell Pearce
8. Michael Weyman
9. Robbie Farah (C)
10. Josh Perry
11. Ben Creagh
12. Anthony Watmough
13. Paul Gallen

Reserves - Prior, Galloway, Waterhouse, Carney

This side spells disaster. It is almost the same as past teams that have lost.
Is it just me or do selectors throw the same players around in a circle hoping that one-day it will work?

The Blues are looking for fire power, not just fire. Remember Michael Weyman playing for the Canberra Raiders; almost without a doubt loss ball, hot headed with stupid penalties and then no ability to off-load.
Since playing for the Dragons, I have seen a successful team, carrying the same Weyman as Canberra did. The only fact there is that Canberra did not have the success the Saints are currently.

Greg Bird - WOW, really. For a person that may have the skills to play Origin, should not be allowed near a football paddock again for all of his off-field dramas.
However, Bird does possess a passing game close to the line, and down field he is another forward with skills and ability. But I'm certain there are better players who have been honest to the game of Rugby League, and have the passion to enthrall in a Blues Guernsey.

Michael Jennings
- Greg Inglis will have a field day playing against Jennings. No defense what so ever, where in Origin it is the biggest part of the game. Are you going for speed Phil, or giving Queensland a 4 try scoring advantage every match?

Josh Perry - OLD SCHOOL. Though this seems to be the problem with every State of Origin series. Hell, let's put Barrett back in the side along with Noddy.
Manly's forward pack is a heavyweight of the NRL competition, yet they always lack field percentage. Is this telling you something?

Paul Gallen
- I say no more. Over-rated, that is the only position you can put him under. I cannot fathom that selectors would choose Gallen in the form that the Sharks are in.
An example for you to ponder is NATHAN HINDMARSH. To think this guy was dropped because the Eels lacked form last year was crucifying. Why then is Paul Gallens name being thrown around? What is happening?

Phil also spoke about Beau Scott coming into the team. WOW again. This guy has not scored a single try for the first 3 rounds. Scott has made 71 tackles, which is an average of 23.4 a game, which is what NSW need, but there are still better who have the ability to do both attack and defence.

Cahn D. Cotter's Selection

1. Jarryd Hayne
2. Brett Morris
3. Timana Tahu
4. Matt Cooper
5. Josh Morris
6. Brett Finch
7. Mitchell Pearce
8. Keith Galloway
9. Michael Ennis
10. Luke Douglas
11. Nathan Hindmarsh (C)
12. Anthony Laffranchi
13. Chris Heighington

Reserves - Luke Lewis, Ben Creagh, Feleti Mateo, Anthony Watmough/Dan Hunt

For most part, I agree with Phil Rothfield's selection. He has great youth there with some mature players. The only problem is that the mature players he chose usually have brain explosions or lack match fitness.
Give Queensland as much penalties as you want them to have with Phil's team.

The Blues need go forward with players that can off-load to tire the Queensland big men. They also must have good off-field behavior as well as on field mongrel. Hard to find? Not really.

Nathan Hindmarsh is a perfect example. Can lead the side and make the tackles that others do not with that passion he shows every game for the Eels.
He also is a great player on and off the field with his notable charity work.

Reasons why I have selected this team

Back-line

It mixes speed, youth, experience and defence all into one. Jennings and Lawrence are not Origin players. Jennings has not scored a try for Penrith in the first 3 rounds and has made only 37 tackles.
Chris Lawrence lacks the heart with 49 tackles and 4 points to his name.

Now compare that with my selections.

Timana Tahu
- The Queenslander's are putting Lote Tuqiri back into the mix, why not Tahu. He has previous experience in a winning side, strong, fast and passionate. He also can contain and match up against Greg Inglis in attack and defense.

Matt Cooper
- Cooper knows about winning and losing. He wants it more than a Jennings or a Lawrence. I will be astounded if he is not selected.
He also is dangerous with his ability to pass and offload unexpectedly and is strong near the try line.

Brett Finch
- Put Finchy next to Pearce and it is a match made in heaven. Experience and youth. Both are very skillful players and will direct play around the field without getting fatigued and none stop talk.
Brett Finch has not been given a solid chance in Origin, but he is an Origin player and if the Blues stick with him and Pearce they will win this years series.
They both have quality kicking games which past Blues teams have lacked.

Forwards

Nathan Hindmarsh (C)
- Should be the Captain, and they should select him. They are mad if they do not. Hindy is an experienced campaigner and has the passion to pull on the Blue Guernsey. He can do the hard yards which will have his troops behind him doing the same.

Chris Heighington - A Paul Gallen without the crap. Tough both mentally and physically, he can defend and make metres with no problems. Already this season he has made a staggering 97 tackles, 387 metres with 34 hit-ups.

Anthony Laffranchi - Size and mobility. He can play anywhere on the field and is an enforcer.

Luke Douglas - Though he is playing in a losing side and young, he is a workhorse. He already has made 118 tackles this year and hit ups are over 40.
He can make metres and off-load. He also has mongrel, but will not lose his cool to give away penalties like a Weyman does.

Reserves

Luke Lewis
- Can virtually play anywhere. 5/8th, Lock and Centre. If an injury happens to a Blues member, he can fill in and take control if necessary. He also has previous experience with the Blues and has a passion to be there.

Eg.If it is Mitchell Pearce that gets injured, push Finch to Half and Lewis to 5/8th.

Feleti Mateo
- Damaging off the bench. Once Queensland's forwards get tired, Feleti can offload and cause havoc where ever he wants to be on the field. He is strong with great acceleration and with that ability to off-load will have the Queensland forwards turning back and forth all night in defense.

The other selected players are what Phil Rothfield chose. I added Dan Hunt into the mixture because of his early form to the 2010 season.

Origin is so far away and with this early talk, I can only hope that they get this team correct. Not just for the series, but for NSW fans, who rightfully know who should be in the side.

Leave your thoughts and tell me what you think?

My NRL Round 4 Tips

What another sensational week of League we all had to watch.

A Benji Marshall show against an Eels outfit that lacked attitude. The Bulldogs thrashing the Roosters with a Josh Morris 4 try spectacle.

Souths dominating a hapless Sharks on Monday Night, recording their first win of 2010.

The Warriors, obliterating Brisbane at Suncorp and the Raiders woeful errors again costing them two competition points.

4/8 tips correct last week for me. That brings my overall tally to 16/24, not bad. Can be improved though.

My Round 4 tips

Melbourne Storm V St. George Dragons

I Tip the Storm

We all know that the Storm playing in Melbourne are difficult to beat. They still have not reached their full potential, however this week at home for the first time, will bring it together. Especially knowing that they are going up against the Dragons.

Saints have also not won a game in Melbourne since 1999. It should be a tight match and I'm tipping that this should be that match of the round.

The Saints will be playing clinical football against a team that has made it their success the past four seasons.
Dragons will need to pull something new out of the hat now for teams are once again aware of how they play. REPETITIVE. The Storm will be on it.

Final Verdict Saints will have plenty of drop ball as the Storm defense will put Soward under constant pressure.
The Storm also have plenty of game breakers and with Cameron Smith kicking game out of dummy half should be able to pin the Dragons in there own end early.
Close finish. Storm by a margin of 4 - 12.

Sydney Roosters V Brisbane Broncos

I tip the Roosters

Unfortunate for Brisbane, the loss of Israel Folau and Denim Kemp is a massive blow to a side with big injury concerns every where. Darren Lockyer can only do so much.
They also have no Corey Parker or Justin Hodges and last weeks massive defeat from NZ at Suncorp has the alarm bells ringing.

Not this week; they travel to the heart of Sydney and take on a Roosters outfit with nothing to lose after the thrashing the Bulldogs gave them. The only thing to keep in mind is if the Roosters think they are an actual chance of making the 8, will surely collapse under the pressure they give themselves.

The need to play care-free football to keep winning. The likes of Myles, Guerra and Mitch Pearce will be looking to control the game up-front and around.
The relationship between Pearce and Carney is more than likely to erupt again this night and will run Brisbane's big men ragged.

Final Verdict Roosters by plenty. I know I said that last week, but I do not think anyone predicted the slaughter. The Roosters will be finally playing out of the harsh sun and heat, and will cherish playing under lights in Sydney.

Roosters must hold on to the ball and limit Brisbane's possession. Pearce and Carney show.

Cronulla Sharks V Parramatta Eels

I tip the Eels

Big concerns for Sharks. Attitude is key for them to improve, they must find pride in the Sharks Guernsey and then play for Coach Stuart if they are a chance.

The Eels are looking to stamp their label on this years NRL competition as a force to be reckoned with.
Last week the Eels forwards lacked momentum going forward and backs had no opportunity against the raging Tigers. They will not make the same mistake this weekend.

Final Verdict Parramatta forwards are they key here. Fui Fui, Poore and Hindmarsh must make inroads and give good off-loads to their backs.

Sharks are in crisis mode, they will play conservative and try to just complete the sets of six. The Eels will pounce on this style of play and should dominate out-wide.

Nth. Queensland Cowboys V Gold Coast Titans

I tip the Cowboys

1. Fortress 2. Jonathan Thurston 3. No Scott Prince 4. Gold Coast away from home.

However, if the Gold Coast are to be a chance, it's their forward pack that should do the damage. But with no Scott Prince, the Titans will find it hard to win this one away from home. Stats show that when Prince does not play for the Titans, that they can only win 1/3 of games.

J.T will direct the play smoothly and the difference of a solid half back will be the key for the Cowboys to win.

Final Verdict Cowboys will control all necessary field position and convert them to points.

Titans lack a quality half-back and even though Preston Campbell should fill in, it will not be enough for them to win.

NZ Warriors V Manly-Warringah Sea-Eagles

I tip the Warriors

The Warriors will continue this early form to post another win. Manly are still struggling and the win last week against Newcastle, though large, was not enough to prove to me that they are going to be able to compete in this one.

The Warriors at home are hard to beat. The Warriors have injury concerns but are able to fill in positions no problems.

Final Verdict - Warriors too strong at home.

Newcastle Knights V Penrith Panthers

I tip the Panthers

Penrith Panthers are about to show how dominating they can be. Newcastle do not stand a chance here.

Panthers forward running out-wide will get over the top of Knights backs and Kevin Kingston up the middle will tire the Knights forwards.

Final Verdict Panthers by plenty. Knights are about to hit the slump everybody predicted, while the Panthers are going to show everybody that they are top 8.

South Sydney Rabbits V Canterbury Bulldogs

I tip the Rabbits

Wow, what a match up this will be. Both teams hit form last weekend. Hard to pick however I think the Rabbits will continue winning know and roll the Bulldogs who are still not quite there.

Final Verdict Rabbits. Tough contest... Close match.

Titans Can Still Win

Written by Cahn D. Cotter

Gold Coast Titans are 3 from 3 in 2010, showing consistency and form. However now they face the dilemma of no Scott Prince. Prince suffered a broken thumb in there 24-8 win over the Raiders last Saturday night.

Prince had surgery to insert a screw and will need 6 weeks to recover. John Cartwright explained to the media yesterday that he was not concerned with statistics that showed the Titans had only won 4 games out of 12 without Prince.

Cartwright still believes that the Titans can go 4 from 4 against Nth Queensland this weekend with no Scott Prince.

Preston Campbell is the most probable selection to fill in for Prince with William Zillman pushing to fullback. Campbell has done the job before for the Titans and is no doubt a key player for the Titans who can still lead the backs around the field.

The Titans face-off with the North Queensland Cowboys in round 4.

Ricky Wants Attitude Change

Written by Cahn D. Cotter

The Sharks are now facing absolute disaster. After there 30-8 loss to the Rabbits last night at Toyota Park, Coach Ricky Stuart identified that a change of attitude is necessary in the Sharks camp.

Can you see it happening?

The signs are alarming for the Sharks, after their 13th straight loss. These results might only cause more problems amongst officials and players.
Is Ricky Stuart doing his job correctly? Are the players loyal to the Guernsey? What changes need to be made?
Already the Sharks have made massive changes to last weeks performance against the Warriors for this match up against the bunnies.

Seeing laughter and a blasè attitude amongst the devastated side in warm downs this morning, attitude is the key for the Sharks who are now confronted with a game next week that could virtually make or break there season and Ricky Stuart.

I was astonished to see these mannerism amongst a team that is facing 14 straight losses. Are these players taking this lack of form seriously? Over-hearing a player (not being named) saying, I was not playing, to a friend or fan before shrugging his shoulders and laughing.

In three weeks the Sharks have conceded 30 differential points, massed a total of 44 errors and are now facing off with a Parramatta outfit ready to stamp, perform and prove to the competition that they are favourites for this 2010 competition.

I only hope that I can be proven wrong about these Sharks. Experts have repeatedly said before this years starting, that the Sharks are the Dark-Horses of this competition and will push for the 8 at the back-end of the season.

I however believe that they are wooden spoon contenders. On the brink of disaster. Is Ricky Stuart facing losing his job over all of this? If so the Sharks will struggle for the rest of the season.

However, some positives for the Sharks is the new signing of half-back Tim Smith. He is a quality half-back that reminds me of a Todd Carney. You only have to see the growing maturity in Todd to see how well he is playing now.
Tim is exactly the same. I think it will be a huge lift for the Sharks and will add a new dimension for the club and more so for Trent Barrett who has lacked a quality half-back inside of him to get his job done.

Hearing the news, Sharks Coach and Legend of the game, Ricky Stuart announced that a change of Attitude is required for the Sharks to start winning. For Ricky sake, I hope the Sharks match up against the Eels for their fans next week and show a passionate display not just for the struggling club, but for their coach who has put so much into off-season, pre-season and now.

Good Luck to the Sharks, Please prove me wrong...

A Defining Moment for One

Written By Cahn D. Cotter

It's the clash of the bottom teams tonight. Sharks V Rabbits, two teams on the brink of disaster.

The Sharks could be going nine months straight without a win, while the bunnies with all their pre-season hype, may drop to last position after 80 minutes. A place where no NRL fan thought they would be.

I tipped the bunnies, for reasons being that the Sharks have made to many changes already in the season. I think the changes are for the better, and only time will tell. But this Sharks team lacks the desire to be able to win.
They will need more time to gel together, however will Ricky Stuart be forced to change the side again three weeks later, only to find the Sharks in the same position again. The Sharks are on a thin sheet of ice, they better get it right soon.

The Bunnies, need to deliver now, or it will be a never for them. Souths forward pack should be one that is feared when looked on paper, but once playing they lack momentum to go forward.
Add Chris Sandow to the mix and the bunnies continually drop ball when they require important possession to post points.

Either way, tonight's match-up, though bottom of the table is set to be a physical display of League. Both clubs are looking for that defining moment in there season and are taking this game none to lightly.

Parra-Lack-Attitude

Written by Cahn D. Cotter

On night that promised so much, came up so little for the re-match between the Tigers V Eels.

Channel 9 highlighted the what could have been match before the actual game started, showing the footage of last years incredible display of football magic.

However this time, the only showcase of brilliance was from one Benji Marshall, and a new recruit Lote Tuqiri. These two players ran the game from the 15 minute mark to the end.
The first 15 belonged to one official Tony Archer, in what was a poor display of refereeing. The way he can take a match away from a team, and then give it to another is amazing. He left burdens on both sides with poor decision making out crucial times which took momentum away from the game and more than that, the fans.

The Eels had the wind taken out of them early with errors and penalties galore, and from there, they lacked energy and passion.

The defense line of the Eels was flat and the play the ball slow. It was like watching school boy League when they past with a "who wants to run the ball".
Kristan Inu was left to take a first hit-up in a set of six early in the second half.

The Tigers made in roads early, dominating the Eels in the ruck with great speed. It took Benji Marshall just 7 minutes to catch Jaryd Hayne out of position again at full-back to see Lote Tuqiri get over for the first.

Than another kick saw the Tigers get another with a sneaky field goal from Marshall to make it 9-0 at half time.

The Eels continued their bad form in the second half until a penalty gave them some momentum, and then Jeff Robson pin-pointing a cross field kick and Reddy finishing it off.

All game the Eels lacked attitude to complete sets, defend, run and kick. The Tigers were enthusiastic, hence them winning.

The Eels need to improve on this before they come up against the Sharks next weekend.

Late News: Mortimer out of Eels V Tigers

Written by Cahn D. Cotter

Daniel Mortimer has been ruled out of tonight's clash against the Tigers.

The Eels 5/8th came down with a late virus and has been scratched. The player who replaces Mortimer tonight is Kris Keating.

It's a huge blow to Parramatta's pre-game, with a shuffle to the side at such late notice.

It is bound to have tipster running to change...

Passion Behind a Broken Door

Written By Cahn D. Cotter

If you want some good advice for this weekends Manly V Newcastle game; tip Manly.

Des Hasler did not have to say one word, well he did, however the video footage said it all. It's his display of powerful passion that will see Manly win over Newcastle this weekend.

20 - 0 in front of the Parramatta Eels, saw a lethargic undisciplined Manly side come to the forefront in the second half.
The week before against the Tigers, Manly again dropped their bundle to lose from 20 points in front.

It left Des Hasler one option, and I agreed with him. Des showed true passion towards his player, something that the Sea-Eagles side lacked in the second half against the Eels.
We all know coaches show enthusiasm behind closed doors, but when a door gets ripped from its hinges like Des did, the players have got to think 'I hope that door is not me next week, I have got to perform.'

Des Hasler is all about Manly. He played with Manly and now coaches them. It is up to Des to show the true meaning of the Guernsey to his players.

Manly will win this weekend, no doubt, for I would not want to be walking into a dressing shed again knowing Coach Hasler is waiting there for me.

If I was coaching Manly, all week I would be showing them that footage of coach Hasler's ripping the door off. The Sea-Eagles will have it in the back of their minds to win or else...

Expect early fireworks as both teams look to stamp their dominance in this clash. The Manly forwards will look to dominate early again and if they do not, expect a bit of biff to lift the mood of the players around.
This is something that past Manly sides have done, if they have lacked energy and momentum.

Who's to say it will not work for them this week.

My NRL Round 3 Tips

Round 2 started boring with the Saints, and ended with a how did they manage to win effort for the Raiders.

It was the in-between football that had everyone talking though. I'll come back to that soon.

I got 6/8 last week, both my tips on Friday Night went against me. The Rabbits, what are they going to do? Demolished week 1 against the Roosters and humiliating, yes, not humiliated, humiliating in round 2 to the Titans in a golden point loss.

The talking point of all this week was Manly. After leading by 20 in both the first two games of the season have been run down from behind. It looks like it could be a long season for the Sea-Eagles.

The Storm triumphant over the Knights which had a rare Billy Slater Sledge.

Another Cowboy victory in the Dairy Farmers fortress and a Manu Vatuvei hat-trick seeing the Sharks steep to a new record low, twelve straight losses.

This week is stepping up to be even harder. The game of the round is Friday nights clash between the Tigers and the Eels. We all remember last years match.

My Tips for Round 3

Wests Tigers V Parramatta Eels - I tip the Eels

Momentum will carry forward this week for the Eels.

It is Fui Fui Moi Moi's 100th NRL game and the big prop will be starting this week, Justin Poore has moved to the bench. Fui Fui will get the Tigers on the back foot early and the Eels will score plenty of early points. Consistency will win them the match at the back end.

I can see back-to-back losses for the Tigers who will slip into an early season slump. They scored plenty of points last week, its the defensive effort that has got me worried. The Tigers were soft on the their try-line letting Aiden Guerra in for 2 easy tries.

Final Verdict The Eels. Just Fui Fui starting in his 100th will get the Tigers on the back foot fast and they will not recover from there.

St George Illawarra Dragons V Nth Queensland Cowboys - I tip the Dragons

Last week I tipped against the Dragons at WIN stadium. This week I will not be doing the same.

It is a long travel for the Cowboys, and even with J.T as a half-back, I think they make to many errors in the forwards. These errors usually happen in their own half or when a try is about to scored.

Saints, as much as I dislike watching them play footy, are clinical. The past two weeks have had an average of 95% completion rates with just 10 errors. It is boring footy, but it seems to work.

Final Verdict The Saints. It's been played at WIN stadium, the only reason. As the season goes on my tips for Saints will not be there, they are going to struggle half way through this year.

Penrith Panthers V Melbourne Storm - I tip the Panthers

Last weeks shock last minute loss to the Cowboys has the seething. The Storm are not playing fundamental football like past seasons yet and almost losing to the Knights proves this.

The Panthers can not wait to be playing football back at home this week, and with the crowd they will topple the Storm out-wide early and up the middle with Kevin Kingston late in the match.

Be aware of the stats though. Melbourne have beaten the Panthers in Penrith since 2005, that is 5 straight losses to the Panthers.

For the Panthers this week, there is no Frank Pritchard or Travis Burns either. But I do not think this will affect them much.

Final Verdict - I am tipping the Panthers because of their unpredictability and the Storm not being the benchmark yet.

Manly Sea-Eagles V Newcastle Knights - I tip Manly

Manly can not continue leading by 20 and losing. Des Hasler is furious.

Debutant last week, star this week Brett Hodkinson will combine with Keiran Foran in the halves and give good ball to the backs Tony Williams and Jamie Lyon.

Manly forwards will also look to dominate up the middle and the Knights lack of experience will give away easy meters. This one is a no-brainer.

Final Verdict - Even though this match is being played at Blue Tongue stadium for all the Central Coast fans, Newcastle without Gidley will implode. Manly will not like walking back into the change rooms if they lose this one.

Gold Coast Titans V Canberra Raiders - I tip the Titans

At Skilled Park, it's hard to go against the Titans.

Canberra last week too many errors, too many tackles, too many everything, but they won against the Broncos. They can not perform like they did last week and expect to win this week.

Final Verdict - Gold Coast will win on completion rates, Scott Prince's kicking game and little Preston's return to Skilled Park.

Brisbane Broncos V NZ Warriors - I tip the Broncos

Unlucky not win last Monday Night, the Broncos at home will impress this week.

The warriors played exciting football last weekend, but it was against the Sharks and they fail to travel well away from NZ.

No Corey Parker this week for the Broncos. He is unlikely to play due to a knee Injury sustained last Monday Night but it should not phase the Broncos attack.

Final Verdict - Backing Broncos. 1 - at Suncorp 2 - Darren Lockyer 3 - Israel Folau

Canterbury Bulldogs V Sydney Roosters - I tip the Roosters

The Roosters are riding a wave of adrenalin – two wins, 80 points scored and a backline that stepped up another notch in Round 2.

Mitchell Pearce has been in scintillating form during the first two rounds, but he’s been ably supported by his fullback, centres, wingers and five-eighth. That’s a lot of man-power in attack.

Canterbury have been lack-luster and this early season slump will continue for a while. David Stagg and Ben Hannant have been performing well for the Dogs, but they lack game breakers.

Final Verdict - The Roosters by plenty. It was funny how all the experts were against the Roosters before this season started. I tipped them to go close to the final 8.
Now that the season is here, the experts are quickly changing there minds - pitiful. It makes me mad.

Cronulla Sharks V South Sydney Rabbits - I tip Souths

Time to perform.

Both teams are on the bottom of the table. Sharks have made big changes this week. I agree with most of them, but it will take time for the to Gel again.

Final Verdict Souths, it is time to perform. If they can improve their defence and Chris Sandow can hold onto the ball, they should have too much firepower for the toothless Sharks, who lack superstars or game changers.

Good Luck to all tippers in Round 3

Cahn D. Cotter

Personal Thanks

I would like to thank Ms. Liz Anderson and the staff at Parramatta for the opportunity to have work experience in the media department.

It was a great to be a part of a friendly team and I appreciated it all the same.
Ms Anderson had me updating the U/20 Players Portfolio, as well as the Round 3 match reports for S.G Ball & Mathews Cup sides.

Weilding Magic at Canberra

Written by Cahn D. Cotter

The Brisbane Broncos have now failed to beat the Canberra Raiders for 5 years at Canberra Stadium. And after watching the game on Monday Night, I have come to the conclusion that Canberra Stadium has a Voodoo against other teams.

It was a mistake ridden game from the Raiders, but somehow, they still managed to win.

In defense, the Raiders made 341 tackles compared to the Broncos 266. From those 341, the Raiders missed 44 of them. With that huge defensive load, how did they have the energy to score points.

As noted by me before this season, the Raiders have one of the worst error stats in last years competition, and that they better control the ball better this seasons. Well, the errors continued once again for Canberra. 20 of them against Brisbane's 12.
And then there was the penalty count of 7-3.

I am amazed that Canberra with all stats against them, still managed to win.

Canberra Stadium must be wielding a magic sword, because the most astonishing stat of the game was the 21 completions from 39 sets.

Canberra Stadium is a fortress that is still holding strong after all these battles. And with the effort on Monday, I think it will be holding strong for many more years.

Why?

Because with the effort and stats like those above. I ask who can beat Canberra, at Canberra?

Who Who? Moi Moi. Not Hayne.

16 - 0 at the half-time siren, the Eels were hoping that that hot Sunday afternoon would end quickly. However Fui Fui had other plans.

I chose to write this article after waiting to see what headlines the supposed experts would write about one man, Jaryd Hayne. And from there I would write my argument.
Unlike those experts, I actually watched that game.

Sure, Jaryd Hayne made that break from his own in-goal. Sure he did a nice little chip and chase play to lead to a controversial try. One thing Hayne did not do, was spark the Eels attack and momentum to win them that game from 20-0 down.

Fui Fui Moi Moi, now the bench player, lead the Eels to victory that day, nobody else. His strong charges towards the defensive line of Manly were courageous, but insane at the same time.

He was denied a try earlier due to a supposive double movement. Than got his just desserts as the wrecking ball charged forward again, this time to score for the Eels. 20-6.

Here some stats for you. In the 49 minutes Fui Fui Moi Moi played, he acquired 13 hit ups, 13 Tackles, 5 Tackle Breaks and one try assists. Not to mention his try.

Jaryd Hayne is a freak, and he proved he can make a game break from anywhere. But honestly, give credit where it is due, not what makes the money.
Fui Fui was the true hero of that game.

My NRL Tips Round 2

What a first week of Rugby League fans had to enjoy for 2010 after what was an intense, dramatic end to last seasons.

Dragons beat last years runners-up, the Eels at Parramatta Stadium with ease. The Saints completion rate was emphatic over the Eels, 35 from 37. Soward's kicking game however was the difference on the night.

Knights upsetting the Bulldogs after horrid off-season the media gave them in the headlines.

A thriller between Queensland's rivals at Suncorp in front of a 48,000 crowd saw a last minute, stand on the edge of your seat try to Denan Kemp to win the game for the Broncos.
A Jonathan Thurston revival brought the teams to evens at 24-24, before veteran Lockyer gave a cut out ball to Kemp who backed his pace to score a long distance try.

Souths forward pack, not performing like everyone thought they would and my Dark Horses of the competition, the Roosters claiming a round 1 victory.

Lote Tuqiri back, and the Tigers playing their thrilling, what's coming next football we know them to play against Manly. It was a bitter match between the arch nemesis's and I cannot wait for the next game between these two sides.

And finally the 'Men in Black' from the foot of the mountains. Are they back? Only time will tell.

Round 1 saw me get 4/8. A few upsets dismantled me for this years competition, however it is only the first game of the season.

Round 2 is shaping up to be even more hard.

My Tips for Round 2.

Saints V Bulldogs, the re-match - From what happened in last year's game when the Bulldogs where clearly robbed from a Soward moment, it should be a physical and confronting game.

I tip the Bulldogs - I think the Dogs will get the Dragons on the bell. They will look to improve from last weeks performance against the Knights. And last year is always in the back of their minds.
I know it is being played at WIN stadium, but I think the Dragons will be lazy in defense and the Dogs forward pack will continually charge at Soward.

Rabbits V Titans - Are the Rabbitohs going to step up here or are the Titans going to finally be able to win away from their fortress, Skilled Park this season. They will want to get the voodoo off the back early on.

I tip the Rabbits - The Rabbits forwards and halve combination will bring it together this week. The forward pack needs to prove that they are a dominant force early in this competition and this will be the game that they do it.

Warriors V Sharks - No Brainer, but the Warriors at home. It is a long travel to play. Congratulations Luke Douglas on 100 games.

I tip the Warriors - I know that I tipped the Warriors to become wooden spooners this year. However I think they just might get the Sharks at home. Sharks will be late bloomers in this competition.
Also the warriors have a great back line that will dominate the Sharks out-wide.

Knights V Storm - I do like the Knights, but they will be brought back down by the benchmark side of the competition this week.

I tip the Storm - Way too clinical for the Knights to get them this early in the competition. Knights will be brought back a level this weekend.
They need a Gidley there to beat the Storm or Corey Patterson playing the role of a Feleti Mateo to dismantle their defense line.

Cowboys V Panthers - Will the Panthers be able to prove that they are not lolli-pops this year? Or are the Cowboys going to stay true to their fans and their fortress.

I tip the Cowboys - At home in the fortress that is Dairy Farmers. Jonathan Thurston will control the game and will put a young Lachlan Coote under pressure with his kicking game early.
Cowboys forwards will create havoc up the middle of the park and that will give JT room to move. Dangerous.

Eels V Sea-Eagles - Another arch rival match for the Eagles. If it was not for their last stout between the Tigers and losing half their team to foul play, it would be closer.

I tip the Eels - Only because Luke Burt 200th game and a new deal. Also if Manly did not have suspensions and injuries from round 1 it would be harder for me. But I like the Eels for this one at Parramatta Stadium.
Watch Feleti Mateo take on the defense of Manly this game and the likes of Tahu to shine with the ball.

Roosters V Tigers - Cannot pick this one. Both teams are elusive and surprising. For me, match of the Round.

I tip the Roosters - Match of the round for sure. Both teams were electric last week and will continue this early form. However I think the Roosters with the momentum of last week and the stress free football will beat the Tigers.

And finally,

Raiders V Broncos - Both teams looking to cement their place in the 2010 competition as a threat. Raiders at home though.

I tip the Raiders - Raiders at home, too strong for my mind. Baby Broncos will be taught a lesson if they go into this game to arrogant.

Good Luck to all who tip this week.

Decision Time for Locky

50 Tests for Australia, including Kangaroo tours and 4 Super League Tests in 1997. Successful World Cup and Tri-Nation honours and also seven years as the Australian Captain.

30 matches for Queensland, then add a record 4 straight series wins. You would have to say Darren Lockyer is a legend of the modern game at playing representative football.

The question in mind for everybody, and yes even for us New South Welshman is will he play representative football in 2010?

Darren Lockyer is yet to give a decision on his representative playing future to either the media or the East coast border of Australia.

However, some experts believe that the ANZAC test played at the new Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, maybe the last honours for Darren.

The Dilemma...

Brisbane, if they had the team of the 90's, could be able to play Lockyer in the State of Origin. The problem this year is they are lacking the depth the Broncos once had.

Brisbane started Round one's clash last Friday Night with three debutantes. Chris Norman; played fullback and received man of the match, Mitchell Dodds and Matt Gillett.

With injury also to Justin Hodges and P.J Marsh retiring, and the hefty load Brisbane already pay with representatives like Folau, Wallace, Parker, Thaiday and Kenny.
It would be hard for Darren to play origin, giving that Brisbane have gave so much to him. Darren might feel the need to give back to Brisbane for loyalty purposes, he might decide that only playing with the Broncos this season is his due responsibility.

Darren Lockyer the veteran is hoping to play, however I feel if he does not play it is because the Broncos need him mid-season if they are a chance to make it to September.

Though, I think New South Wales are hoping that he does not play. The amount of times Darren has snatched victory in the final moments of these war's called State of Origin is insurmountable. Off the top of my head I can think of at least three.

State of Origin is the highest level of Rugby League and 'Dad's Army' is ready to play together again. However if they are a chance of winning, they need Locky to be there.

Without Locky NSW will gain something they have not touched for four years running, the prestigious State of Origin shield.

I only hope for New South Wales, that selectors can pick a team that does the job. They are getting close, but it seems they always go around in circles picking the same players.

Barrett, nope does not work. Kimmorley, does not work then back to Barrett, same problem again. As you can see, this is just the halve combination's, I cannot even begin with the forwards.

The big reason why Queensland the past four series have had so much success is that they have selected the same players. This gives opportunities like bonding, understanding individuals roles and the belief that they can win.

And with the great names like Darren Lockyer, Jonathan Thurston, Cameron Smith, Billy Slater, Israel Folau, Justin Hodges, Sam Thaiday and Greg Inglis; where does the list stop? It has only helped the Maroons domination of the past series.

And then not to mention the players that are eligible for Queensland, but cannot make the side for the above reasons. Scott Prince seems to be the unlucky one amongst all of them.

Darren may path the way for a new representative player to come through the ranks of the Maroons, but it would be in just for Scott Prince. And again in just for Scott if Darren does play. What depth Queensland have.

I think Darren will play the Origin Series for one last time. He knows Queensland has the team to protect him in defense. A Queensland team with great depth, history, values and skill.
Plus a Queensland team that knows how to win and believes enough to go five series straight against the Blues.

This will be in the back of Darren's mind. I only hope Brisbane Broncos let this war veteran play one last time for us fans, who also have given Darren so much over his career.

Showstoppers Riding a Dark Horse

In my predictions for 2010 (Go To 2010 Final Verdict Tab), I stated that the Roosters would be the Dark Horses of the competition, and that if Carney and Pearce found a relationship early that they would be hard to stop.

Well, on Sunday, the duo did against Souths Sydney. Both players were electric and kept Souths on the back foot the entire game.

The young, but mature half Pearce and entertaining fullback Carney ran the Souths forwards ragged. Souths were lethargic by the end and lacked the intensity that Carney and Pearce were setting for the Roosters.

The Roosters were called, the wooden spoon contenders by experts of the game this year. I knew from watching trials that they were far from that.

The team they have is one that should be feared. Braith Anasta, Minichiello, Kenny-Dowall, Phil Grahem, Nate Myles and Jason Ryles. Add Carney and Pearce, this is a team that will keep opposition defensive lines honest all season.

They also have an excellent, experienced mentor who understands the game better than any other coach in the business, Brian Smith.

It is also a stress free season for the Roosters, which is why I also think they will almost reach the 8, with an opportunity to play September football.

If the Roosters have an injury free season, the forwards keep going forward and Mitch Pearce and Todd Carney give outside backs opportunities. Roosters will push for the 8.

Mitch Pearce should be handed a Blues Guernsey this year. Also if Carney and Pearce continue destroying oppositions then Todd Carney will be given Blues honours also.

What was Coach Anderson Thinking?

When I had seen the starting Eels line-up for the Friday nights re-match clash against the Dragons, I had to sit and ponder?

Which prop forwards would Coach Anderson start with?

Without a doubt in my mind, I thought back to 2009 when the Eels in the fourth qualifying final beat the Dragons.

They defended early and squandered Saints opportunities before Moi Moi and Mannah gave them momentum late in the first half to dominate for the rest of the match.

Seeing the Eels run out onto the paddock for the first time in 2010, it was to my surprise that I saw Justin Poore and Nathan Cayless as the starting props. I was immediately shocked.

Where was the road train with a seventh gear? The cult hero, Mr Fui Fui Moi Moi?

Coach Anderson has a massive dilemma on his hands. Should he always start games with Nathan Cayless, for reasons of loyalty or bench him. This would hand the captaincy over to Nathan Hindmarsh.

I thought of reasons why and I have come to the conclusion that I am in favour of Nathan Cayless remaining as starting prop, until he does not prove otherwise.

Justin Poore should have been the bench warmer for the first game of 2010, especially coming up against his old club, the Dragons.

I knew that as soon as Justin Poore got involved, that a penalty would have been given straight away. This putting the Eels on the back foot with no one to spark a early revival. And with that, Tony Archer blew his whistle.

A selfish penalty from prop Justin Poore against old team mate Mick Weyman, saw the Eels defending immediately in their own half.

From here they never recovered momentum, and with Jamie Soward's kicking game, were not able get back into the match.

A small revival came when Moi Moi entered in the 23rd minute, but by then, Saints were playing clinical sets of six.

The Eels being favourites this season need to knock up as many wins as soon as possible or they might find themselves in the familiar position of last year. Coach Anderson should have started with Cayless and the powerful Moi Moi.

I saw Moi Moi was not pleased with being the number one prop last year, and a big reason why the Eels outfit ran in second in 2009, coming off the bench in Friday Nights clash.

It's in the best interest for the Eels to always start Moi Moi to get the momentum going forward.

Justin Poore needs to prove himself in the Blue & Gold and until he does, Nathan Cayless should still be running on when the whistle gets blown.
